How to Grow a Moon Crystal

How to Grow a Moon Crystal

Welcome, all young scientists! The world of crystal growing is at your fingertips. The Grow, Glow, & Show Crystal Science Kit will inspire young ones to engage with the world around us with STEM activities that revolve around crystals!

Grow, Glow & Show Crystal Science

Let’s jump to the experiment — If you’ve been following along, you’ll know there are all sorts of ways to grow crystals. And now, we’ll create one from a crystal seed. This crystal seed is in the shape of a moon! And the best part? It glows in the dark!

How to Grow a Moon Crystal

1. For this experiment, you’ll need the moon crystal seed, thread, a container, and a measuring spoon, Ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP). Have your parent ( I mean head scientist!) prepare a cup of boiling water.

2. 10 inches for thread - this will be used to hang the moon into the container.

3. Tie one end of the thread to the moon seed. You’ll notice some grooves on the edges which makes for a tighter grip.

4. With the measuring spoon, gather one scoop of ADP and pour it into the container.

5. Have the head scientist adult carefully pour one cup of water into the container next.

6. With a popsicle stick, stir the substance until it dissolves fully. Let the container sit until room temperature - this may take up to 30 minutes.

7. Meanwhile… Take another popsicle and your moon seed on a string. Tie the opposite end of the thread around the center of the popsicle. Try to estimate how much string you’ll need to be wrapped around the popsicle; the moon seed will need to be hung without touching the bottom of the container or the sides.

8. BRRRING! The timer goes off after 30 minutes! It’s time to dunk the moon seed into the container’s substance. Rest the popsicle stick across the top of the cup. *Remember to let the moon seed hand right in the middle of the container.

9. Place your experiment in a place where it won’t be disturbed. The crystal seed needs time to grow! Check back in a day or two and observe how the crystals grow! The longer you leave it in the substance, the more crystals will grow.

10. 48 hours later… the crystals have grown! Carefully pull out the moon crystal from the container. Rinse under cool water, pat to dry, and add your moon crystal to your display case. If you think it looks cool now, just wait till nighttime and see it glow!
